Participatory Videos involve communities in shaping and creating their own film. The idea behind this is that making a video is easy and accessible, and is a great way of bringing people together to explore issues, voice concerns or simply to be creative and tell stories. This process can be very empowering, enabling a group or community to take action to solve their own problems and also to communicate their needs and ideas to decision-makers and/or other groups and communities. As such, PV can be a highly effective tool to engage and mobilize people in the context of agriculture and to help them implement sustainable farming.
Participatory Videos are effective in disseminating agricultural content as people prefer them to reading. Among the youth, the concept of videos is not new and many of the youth are excited by videos. Usage of videos in Agriculture promotes engagement of the youth in the sector because they find them attractive. Youths do videos for music, movies and they like them. It is therefore easier for them to use the same videos for agricultural content and engage in agriculture effectively.
In participatory videos, participants share their voices with other groups or communities, including decision-makers, donors and general public. It is this kind of sharing that promotes learning from each other and nurturing new farmers. Living stories from farmers are captured by communities themselves and shared to promote decision making among policy makers and other partners.
Through participatory videos, a range of impressive agricultural initiatives and suggestions have been documented by those directly involved. It is cheap and effective and easy to share across the country and even further through the social media platforms such as YouTube.
